Service will also address workplace support required, social reciprocity, effective communication strategies, job expectations and productivity requirements.

Summary of Service:
Services are developed based on the individual’s employment background, employment choices, strengths, abilities and interests.
Job-related services may include:
 • Job search and placement assistance
 • Job retention services
 • Follow-up services
 • Follow-along services

Services are based on a continuum of career exploration and employment that may include all or part of the following:
1. Work-based learning experiences, that is provided in an integrated environment in the community which will explore the interaction of the individual with environmental factors;
2. Exploration regarding enrollment in comprehensive transition or postsecondary educational programs at institutions of higher education;
3. Workplace readiness training to develop social skills and independent living;
4. Instruction in self-advocacy (including instruction in person-centered planning), which may include peer mentoring (including peer mentoring from individuals with disabilities working in competitive integrated employment).
5. Teaching effective strategies to increase the likelihood inclusion in communities and competitive integrated workplaces;
6. Applying evidence-based findings to develop and improve strategies to obtain, advance in and retain competitive integrated employment;
7. Providing education and resources to family members to enable the individual to achieve a successful employment outcome.
If the individual is still in school seeking employment, ASD services can be provided by cooperatively with transition services of local educational agencies.

ASD Training

Program Description:

The proposed autism project is a partnership with WSC, Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA), and Mott Community College.

This six week program will serve incoming seniors from Livingston County who have autism and are planning to move forward with their post-secondary education.  The program will provide assessments for them to assist in determining interests and skills for further educational training and employment.  The students will be placed in a dispersed enclave to work at a variety of career pathways.  The career pathways may include the following categories: health sciences, natural resources and agriscience, human services, arts and communication, business, management marketing and technology, engineering/manufacturing and industrial technology.  It is expected that the youth and a job coach will participate in these practical hands-on experiences.  The youth will work two days a week for three hours at a time.

Summary of Service:
ASD Program provides autistic youth with the opportunity to earn and learn, while gaining real work experiences in a variety of occupations in the community that were developed by Work Skills Corporation. These worksites include sites that focus on: natural resources, arts and communication, manufacturing, recreational and landscaping.  Additionally, services include life coaching and skills that are necessary to successfully complete the transition from high school into adult roles. This is accomplished by incorporating individualized needs, abilities, and functional skills with the curriculum, as well as, exposure to a post secondary classroom setting. The program improves the quality of the workforce by ensuring that all participants receive the support and assistance they need to be competent and work appropriate for future employment. During this time the participant is afforded an opportunity to try different jobs and begin to hone in on their own personal likes and dislikes as it relates to careers.  The youth learn specific knowledge and expertise related to work and leadership; begin to understand the values and beliefs of employers; develop and self-assess strengths and worker traits; learn abilities, career interests; and expand compensatory skills of conflict resolution, values and work ethics.  From these experiences each young adult is able to use the information gathered to empower them to make employment decisions. This program integrates a work component that demonstrates to the participants the skills that are necessary to obtain and maintain a job such as interviewing, resume writing and work appropriate behavior. Currently the ASD program runs in the summer only.

Assessment Services – Our state-of-the-art career exploration and assessment services provide participants with career development opportunities that focus on their preferences, strengths, abilities, and needs. As work interests are explored and transferable skills are identified, the information accumulated is practically applied to the local job market to ensure the right job fit. Assessments may include information on learning styles, aptitudes, modes of communication, and/or a participant’s endurance and stamina. Assessment services include OJE’s (On-the-Job Evaluations), Vocational Evaluations, Community-Based, Situational, Specialized, Clerical, PC Skills, A+ Certification, Forklift Operation, Transferrable Skills Analysis, Labor Market Surveys, Custodial Skills, Pre-Employment Interview Assessments. 
Assessment services can be one day up to two weeks in duration.

Case Management/Service Coordination-PR involves vocational guidance, assessments, career exploration activities and developing individualized service plans. Participants are assisted in the use of community resources, with an emphasis on developing independence. Participants work in cooperation with the employment coordinators to ensure the service plans are implemented and programming needs are met.

Enclave/Skill Building

Program Description:

All aspects of skill building and supported employment servicers are tailored to the needs and capabilities of each person. Assistance is provided to encourage development of natural supports.

Skill building is used to expand participants understanding and knowledge of themselves and their environment and master specific new concepts and skills. Participants take part in unpaid skill building activities designed to move them into paid employment. Assistance consists of activities designed to increase participant’s self-sufficiency and to engage in meaningful activity such as, school, work, or volunteering.

Supported employment participants earn a wage for work performed. Participants work next to and interact regularly with an integrated workforce. On-site job coaching and training is provided. Employer/co-worker training is provided.

Job Coaching/Follow-Along

Program Description:

Job coaching and follow-along services are activities that are employment-related to promote successful training of a person to establish or reestablish job skills, job adjustment, retention, and advancement. The services are based on the individual employee with a focus on achieving long-term retention of the person on the job. Often the support is intensive for the initial orientation and training of an employee with the intent of leading to natural supports and reducing external job coaching. However, some people may not require any employment support at the job site; others may require intensive initial training with a quick decrease in support, while some will be most successful when long-term support is provided. 
Program Hours of Availability: Business hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday but based on participant needs hours can be adjusted.

Summary of Service:
Job Coaching/Follow-Along Services involve one-on-one training or mentoring at the participant’s place of employment or while they are involved in employment. Job coaching is also used to address job retention or “job save” issues with a short-term goal of assisting persons served with learning their core job responsibilities and a long-term goal to assist in developing natural supports that will aid them in maintaining employment. 
These services are designed to provide participants with employment support. Services can vary in length and may be a combination of any/all components, as required. Services will be designed specific to the participants’ needs and may change as the need changes. Service components address the issues relative to Follow-Along Services, Follow-up Services and/or Job Retention Support Services. 
Components of Services 
 • Job site visits and follow-up to insure ongoing communication with the 
       participant & employer: 
-Communication between WSC and persons served 
-Communication between WSC and employer 
-WSC keeps appropriate stakeholders in the communication loop 
-Job Coach may serve as a liaison between employer and employee, as well as garnishing self-advocacy skills 
 • Assistance with development of natural supports in the workplace

-Train supervisors/co-workers in appropriate techniques that match

-Enhance soft and hard skills relevant to position 
-Enhance computer literacy, functional literacy skills, work related academic skills, customer service skills, ensuring knowledge of compensation and benefits, chain of command, grievance procedures, ethics, work expectations, and other common work practices 
-Adjusting to workplace changes including job duty changes,

This service is for people who require up to 4 hours of support per month. This service may take place before or after job coaching services have been provided and their employment site.

Services/supports are time limited and can be provided at the job sites, within formal and organized training and educational settings, through counseling sessions, tutorial services, or within the WSC.

Services are designed to be time-limited, involving real work experience in a manufacturing environment and office type setting. Job Skills/Transitional Employment/Custodial Training:
Training services typically last one month or more depending on individual’s skill development and are offered year-round. More individualized daily support is available through this service than can be provided in either transitional employment or work adjustment training. Services are intended to be time-limited, comprised of real work in WSC’s manufacturing and/or custodial training environment. Job skills training services help participants develop independent, positive work habits and behaviors and prepare for the demands of a competitive work environment. Transitional employment is a time-limited, real work experience in a manufacturing environment. To qualify for transitional employment services, a person should be able to work independently without the need for intensive daily support.

Staff Experience:
WSC staff backgrounds include master and bachelors’ educational degrees; experience in the areas of vocational rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, teaching, social work, human resources, HR development of youth and adult services, geriatric services, certified brain injury specialist, business administration, staffing recruitment, psychology, service  industry, and management. WSC staff is trained annually on medication and storage administration for participants working within our facility.   Distribution and storage of medication is only allowable following the written orders of a licensed physician for the purpose of maintaining health and treatment.

Population(s) Served: Individuals aged 16 and older with disabilities and/or with barriers to employment that are unemployed or underemployed.
