Success Story: Washtenaw Skill Building

At the WSC Washtenaw Skill Building Program, progress rarely happens in straight lines — it builds, one smile, one step, one success at a time.

Every day adds another layer of good on top of good.  Led by Susan, our Job Mentor Lead, the program continues to grow through compassion, creativity, and purpose. She is the calm in the chaos, the quick laugh in a busy morning, and the steady voice that reminds everyone,

“You’ve got this.”

With her guidance, Work Skils has become a place where growth feels joyful and purposeful — and where every individual is supported in building skills, confidence, and community.

Gregory, who receives ongoing vocational and literacy support at WSC, lights up the library during his weekly sessions.

Recently, he reached a major milestone — recognizing and identifying more than 25 sight words. His progress reflects positively on WSC’s mental and emotional well-being, where learning builds both confidence and capability, and where small victories become big steps toward independence.

Fletcher, a dynamically active member of our skills services, has made tremendous progress on his wellness journey. Through engaging, community-based activities at the Washtenaw Community College Health & Fitness Center, he has lost more than 20 pounds and reported gaining even more self-assurance.

His journey embodies WSC’s commitment to overall physical health — showing that health and happiness grow together through consistency, encouragement, and community support.

Mitch, who joined WSC to strengthen his workplace and social skills, has found his rhythm volunteering with Food Gatherers, Washtenaw County’s food bank and food-rescue program.

His work there has expanded his communication, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills — and strengthened WSC’s social pillar of connection, contribution, and community impact. He’s learned that helping others not only builds confidence, but deepens purpose.

Together, these stories remind us that real progress happens through creativity, kindness, and community. When opportunity, teamwork, and compassion meet, growth follows — good on top of good, and heart on top of heart.
