From Canvas to Curtain: Brighton Musical Theater Creates a Space to Belong for Artisan Corner Artists

Updated: Mar 26

Brighton Musical cast members pose in front of a Frozen-themed backdrop after a live rehearsal.

Brighton, Michigan — On March 19, 2026, WSC Artisan Corner participants delivered more than 25 hand-painted, sketched, and illustrated gifts to the Brighton High School Theater program in celebration of their live production of Disney’s Frozen: The Musical.

What began years ago as a meaningful connection has grown into a unique and inspiring experience—one that was sparked by the theater team itself after discovering the work being created inside the Artisan Corner studio.

This experience is never about exchange — it's about expression.

Inspired by the production and the opportunity to connect, Artisan Corner participants created artwork and brought candy as a heartfelt thank you to the cast and crew — whose energy (and appreciation for a little sugar) helps bring the performance to life.

In response, the Brighton High School Musical Theater program extends a special invitation each year. Welcoming participants and their families into a private dress rehearsal experience designed to be inclusive, engaging, and accessible.

They meet cast members. They explore backstage.

They witness the artistry, teamwork, and energy that bring a production to life.

Creative Arts Director and Service Coordinator, Michelle Acevedo, reflected on the experience of this year's attendees and one story stood out.

Sam, attending for her second year, showed remarkable growth. Typically reserved, she connected with cast members in a way that spoke volumes—sharing hugs with lead characters Elsa, Anna, Sven, Olaf, and several others in the cast.

What may seem like a small moment to some was, in reality, a powerful breakthrough.

Made possible by thoughtful invitations and a shared commitment to inclusion; through experiences like this—Artisan Corner participants are given space to connect, express themselves, and grow in confidence within a welcoming community.

A Relationship Built Behind the Scenes

For Creative Arts Director & Service Coordinator, Michelle, this connection is deeply personal.

Her involvement in community theater began more than 14 years ago, when her daughter joined the Brighton High School musical theater program. What started as a way to support her daughter quickly grew into something much more.

Over the years, Michelle has contributed behind the scenes in countless ways—helping create more than 70 ball gowns for Cinderella, designing Flying Monkey wings, crafting talking crow costumes, and even building samba-style apple tree ensembles. Along the way, she’s shared her skills with students, teaching techniques like airbrushing and bringing creative concepts to life.

That work didn’t go unnoticed.

While working on costumes inside the Artisan Corner studio, participants were able to witness pieces of the theatrical process firsthand—sparking curiosity, creativity, and connection. After visiting the studio, Brighton High School’s costume, hair & makeup director Kristine Stuenkel and director Sonja Marquis extended the first invitation for Artisan Corner participants to attend a rehearsal.

That invitation became a tradition.

Since then, participants have experienced productions including The Wizard of Oz, High School Musical, Guys & Dolls, Anastasia, and now Frozen.

More than just a performance, these experiences open the door to a world many might not otherwise have the opportunity to access—creating a space where individuals with special needs can feel welcomed, included, and part of something truly special.

Each year, this experience is not only appreciated—it’s celebrated.
