With compassion and support, our highly qualified teachers and staff work closely with students to ensure they are successfully meeting academic goals and prepared for post-secondary education and/or employment.

Academics

Brighton Academics

The curriculum at WSC Academy follows the guidelines of the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC). Each student meets the same standards of all public traditional and nontraditional programs. Because our students are nontraditional students, we approach the curriculum differently than other area programs. The curriculum at WSC Academy is constantly evolving to fit the needs of our population. The changes we make in curriculum instruction are based on student requests, student needs, and the experience of the staff to stay in-tune to student learning styles and monitor student progress.

With the Academy's blended learning model, students are empowered to make choices in their educational path. Students that flourish with all on-line courses can stay in all online courses; students that prefer a mixed curriculum can take in-person courses. The 2011/2012 school year has been the introduction of the blended learning model and has shown great success and student support. An average student day is outlined below:

8:30am-10:30am Online class in the learning lab In-person class
10:30am-12:30pm Online class in the learning lab In-person class
After School Work 2 hours online from home or in the learning lab Work 2 hours online from home or in the learning lab

Our online course curriculum is currently provided by Courseware. The curriculum is fine tuned by our curriculum experts making sure each online program meets the needs of the MMC. In addition to curriculum review from expertise staff, the teaching staff supports the learning of this material through open lab hours, the volunteer program, and open communication with curriculum experts for improvement.

Project Based/Instructor Led Learning

WSC Academy offers Instructor Led/Project-based Learning (PBL). Project-based learning is an instructional method that provides students with complex tasks based on challenging questions or problems that involve the students' in problem solving, decision making, investigative skills, and reflection that includes teacher facilitation. PBL is focused on questions that drive students to encounter the central concepts and principles of a subject hands-on. PBL is a unique teaching technique that promotes and practices new learning habits, emphasizing creative thinking skills by allowing students to find that there are many ways to solve a problem.

WSC Academy's instructor led classes appeal to nontraditional learners through project based learning that meets and often exceeds traditional Michigan Merit Curriculum. In 2012 we were able to offer MMC required art and psychology classes.

Creative Art

Brighton Creative Art

Art classes are held at WSC’s Studio West in downtown Brighton. The studio provides an environment designed to inspire artistic creativity. Students will use the bright open space to create and display works of art.

Students receive instruction and work with a variety of media, which includes batik, drawing, painting, calligraphy, logo creation, and cartooning. In addition, students learn about artists and iconic landmarks of the world. The art program fosters acceptance of ownership which makes each student at WSC an individual, yet part of a group they are proud to be a part of.
